There are more ministers than adult Gamers...

Today I went to the first class of two training courses called "Violencia en el ámbito familiar y manejo interdisciplinario de las adicciones" and since we had to work in teams we had to introduce ourselves with the group, we were no more than 60 people in total. It took like half an hour to introduce ourselves and one of the things one of the trainers wanted to know in our introduction was our hobbies and our job.

It surprised me that one of the first guys to introduce himself said that he liked to play video games, and soon after another one said too, in total four of us said that we liked playing games as a hobby, all good and all, almost at the end of the introductions some old dudes (most of them were more than 50 years old) started to say that they where ministers of local churches and serve various institutions related to addictions, that group consisted of 7 or 8 people (hence my title :P), but they weren't from the same institution, although they were from the same region of Juarez (I think it was Anapra and nearby places, can't remember well).

One cool think from the expositor is that she mocked the power of praying against medicaments, emphasizing the importance of medical treatment in the treatment of addictions, it almost made me laugh, but it wasn't the place nor time.

  1. What approach do they teach for dealing with addiction? If there is one thing I loathe about religion, it is preying on people in vulnerable states, such as dealing with addiction. That 12-Steps program is such a piece of crap! Thinly veiled evangelism, by forcing addicts to be submissive to a "higher" power, essentially telling them they are worthless and powerless! Wtf?! But anyway, sorry about that digression...Adult gamers are not rare, I don't think. But then again, I work with a bunch of geeks, so perhaps my sample of "adults" is not very reflective of reality haha

  2. The ministers I don't know, but the expositor had a multidisciplinary approach, medicine, psychology and psychiatry, at least that was the minimum she said was needed, as well as the help of family and their incorporation in the process (familiar therapy) because alcoholism and drug addictions often have familiar causes. It was pretty well done, and yeah, I agree that there are more gamers than ministers, it's just that in that moment, in that specific place, it was other way :P

  3. I view this a positive, at least those ministers don't think they know everything and that the bible holds all the knowledge to be learnt...thats a step in the right direction
